Understanding Undertones in PMU: Read the Skin, Pigment, and Healed Goal

You choose a beautiful medium neutral brown. It looks right in the bottle. It looks right in the cap. The fresh brows look balanced.

Then the healed photo comes back and the color appears cooler than expected. Maybe it looks gray. Maybe it looks a little ashy. And now you are staring at that same bottle asking, “How did this brown turn into that?”

When I first started doing PMU, realizing that bottle color and healed color were not always identical was honestly terrifying. I wanted to know how I could look at a pigment and predict what it would look like in each client’s skin. I wanted the color in the bottle and the healed result to make sense together.

The honest answer came from looking at more than the pigment. Undertone matters, but undertone is only half the story. The overtone matters too. The pigment sits between them, and both can influence what we see after healing.

The pigment sits in a sandwich of color

Teryn teaches this as a color sandwich: the implanted pigment is viewed within layers of color influence.

Below the pigment is the undertone, the visible color influence coming from beneath the surface. Above it is the overtone, the visible color and condition of the epidermis we look through to see the implanted pigment.

This is a teaching model for understanding why healed pigment is never viewed in isolation. Either layer may have a mild or strong influence, and sometimes they work together.

Undertone is the color influence from below

The undertone is not always easy to see or identify. It lives beneath the surface, and its visible color direction can vary from one client to another. Blood, melanin, collagen, fat, and the way light travels through the skin can all contribute to what the artist sees.

This is why one client may show a soft cool influence while another pulls strongly pink, red-violet, blue, green, yellow, or gray. We are not diagnosing the skin. We are assessing the visible color influence that may affect the healed appearance.

If that undertone is strong, it may show through the implanted color and cool the appearance of the brow. A pigment that looked neutral in the bottle can appear ashier once it is healed in that particular skin.

 

Overtone is the filter from above

The overtone is the part artists can overlook. It is the visible color and condition of the epidermis laying over the pigment. Because the pigment is viewed through this layer, the overtone acts like a filter.

Ruddiness, a strong pink appearance, sun-damaged skin, surface discoloration, and other visible skin characteristics may affect how the healed pigment appears. In some clients, the overtone can have an even stronger influence than the undertone.

And here is the important difference: you cannot cover the overtone with pigment. The overtone is above the pigment. No matter how saturated the brow is, we still view that color through the epidermis.

 

The word “appearance” matters

Let’s say you implanted a medium neutral brown and the newly healed brow appears gray. That does not automatically mean the pigment itself chemically turned gray.

If we could look at that pigment by itself inside the skin, the color may still be the same medium neutral brown that came from the bottle. What changed is how we are viewing it. The undertone influences it from below, and the overtone filters it from above.

That distinction was a major ah-ha moment in Teryn’s color theory teaching. It moves the artist away from blaming the bottle and toward assessing the whole color environment.

Newly healed appearance and long-term color change are not the same thing. As pigment ages, colorants with different lightfastness and aging behavior may fade at different rates. That can change the balance of the shade over time. A newly healed cool appearance, however, may be the skin influencing how an unchanged pigment is seen.

Important Distinction: Newly healed color can appear different because of skin influence. Aging color can also shift when components of a pigment shade fade differently. Those are related color concerns, but they are not the same process. 

 

Depth can add another cool-looking layer

Now add depth to the picture. When pigment is implanted too deep, it is viewed through more skin and light interacts with the implanted color differently.

Depending on the skin, pigment, depth, and healing response, the color may appear gray, blue-gray, blue, or purple-gray. A warm or neutral brown does not automatically protect the artist from that appearance.

This is why color selection cannot fix a depth problem. The artist has to review the whole appointment: skin assessment, pigment choice, depth, technique, saturation, tissue response, and healed work.

 

Saturation changes how strongly the skin may influence the result

Saturation can affect how strongly the client’s visible color influences show through the healed result. A soft, sheer brow and a more saturated brow do not create the same color conversation.

But more saturation is not automatically the answer. It must make sense for the skin, technique, existing pigment, and intended healed goal. The overtone remains above the implanted color, so adding more pigment does not remove the influence of the epidermis.

This is where healed-work experience and complete color theory training matter. The goal is not to cover every visible influence. It is to choose an appropriate treatment plan for the client in front of you.

 

Four questions to ask before filling the pigment cap

Before the pigment cap: Read the skin. Review existing pigment. Name the healed goal. Then consider the variables the bottle cannot control.

You do not need to force every client into a rigid label. You do need to slow down and assess the full color situation before filling the pigment cap.

1. What color influences are visible in the skin?

Look at the client in consistent, neutral light. Consider what appears to come from beneath the surface and what may be part of the visible epidermal filter.

2. Is existing pigment already part of the picture?

Assess its color, saturation, shape, and condition separately from the skin. An oversaturated or unsuitable brow may need a different next step before more pigment is implanted.

3. What is the intended healed goal?

A soft, sheer result and a more defined result require different planning. Choose the target color, technique, and saturation goal together.

4. What else could change what you see?

Depth, technique, tissue response, scar tissue, healing, lifestyle, sun exposure, and pigment aging may influence the final appearance. Document fresh and healed work so your decisions are informed by evidence, not the bottle alone.

 

Warmth should answer a visible need

Once an artist understands that skin can cool the appearance of pigment, it is easy to reach for warmth every time. But more warmth is not automatically better. It is simply more warmth.

A warmer target shade or modifier should answer a color influence the artist has actually assessed. The undertone, overtone, existing pigment, intended saturation, and healed goal all matter. Exact modifier choices and amounts are line-specific decisions that belong inside complete training and current manufacturer guidance.

The goal is not to overpower the client’s skin. The goal is to work with the visible color environment so the healed result has the best opportunity to appear appropriate for that client.

The next responsible decision

When a healed brow looks cooler than expected, do not jump straight to “the pigment turned gray.” Ask where the color influence is coming from.

Is the undertone pulling from below? Is the overtone filtering from above? Was the pigment placed too deep? Was the saturation level right for that skin and healed goal? Is existing pigment or aging behavior part of the picture?

That is what critical thinking looks like in PMU. The better you understand the skin, the pigment, and the way the work was implanted, the more confidently you can make the next responsible choice and set honest expectations with the client.
