Trust Your Gut: How to Protect Yourself and Your PMU Business

You know that feeling—the twist in your stomach, that subtle whisper warning you something just isn't right? Trust it. Your gut instinct is your best ally in this industry, especially when you're permanently tattooing faces. Ignoring your intuition rarely ends well, usually landing you in situations full of stress, regret, or even potential harm.

At Girlz Ink, we hold our boundaries firmly. We never tolerate disrespect or abuse, and neither should you. Every artist has the right to refuse service to anyone who makes them uncomfortable. Your peace of mind matters more than the fear of losing a client.

Recognize the Red Flags Early

The best protection is prevention. Pay close attention from your first interaction with a potential client:

  • Are their emails, texts, or phone calls edgy, demanding, impatient, or rude?

  • Do they question or challenge your professional responses excessively?

  • Do interactions trigger that uneasy feeling?

If something feels off early on, consider declining their business immediately or suggest an in-person consult. If during the consult the feeling remains, trust it—do not book.

It's Never Too Late to Say No

Even if the client is already at your studio and you're all set up, you can still hit pause. Politely excuse yourself for a moment, collect your thoughts, then return and professionally say:

"I'm sorry, but this isn’t going to work out. I'm not the right artist for you."

Stick firmly to this simple statement, even if they press for an explanation. Why? Because no reasoning will satisfy someone determined to challenge your boundaries. Keeping your response clear, direct, and repeated if necessary, protects you from drawn-out, stressful interactions.

Handling Negative Reviews

If refusing service results in a bad review, don't panic. Platforms like Yelp and Google typically remove negative reviews when no service was actually provided. If a review remains, respond briefly and professionally. Explain simply that you made a professional decision not to provide the service. Your composed response speaks volumes to potential clients reading reviews.

Your Safety and Peace Come First

We understand—turning away business, especially when starting out, can feel difficult. But remember, accepting problematic clients often costs far more in stress, anxiety, and potential harm than the income you'd receive.

Finding your voice and setting boundaries is liberating and empowering. It protects your mental health, your business reputation, and even your personal safety. Trusting your intuition isn't optional—it's essential.

Always, always trust your gut. It’s there to keep you safe, secure, and successful.
