Can You Get Pixels with Iron Oxide Pigments? Yes, and Here’s How!

✨ Pixels. You know… those soft, dusted dots that build a beautiful, airy, almost topical makeup effect in a healed brow. But can you create that look using iron oxide pigments?

Over the last few months, we’ve heard too many artists say, “You can’t get pixels with iron oxide!” And we’re here to clear that up. Because that statement? It's just not true.

Let’s set the record straight: you can absolutely achieve crisp, soft, pixelated brows using iron oxide pigments—just like you can with carbon-based or organic pigments.

What Really Creates Pixels in PMU?

Pixels are not created by the type of pigment. They’re created by the artist’s technique, paired with the right tools and knowledge.

To get those clean, airy dots we all love, here’s what really matters:

  • Proper Depth: Too deep and you’re not getting pixels—you’re getting blowout.

  • Right Needle Configuration: Smaller configurations and tight groupings help you create delicate, dusted pixels.

  • Solid Machine and Movement Control: Your hand movement and speed, machine stroke, and overall control directly affect the outcome.

  • Experience and Training: No pigment in the world will save bad technique.

Let’s be real—blaming your pigment for the lack of pixels is like a mechanic blaming the type of car for engine noise. It’s not the car. It’s the know-how.

Iron Oxide Pigments CAN Create Pixelated Brows

We’ve seen it firsthand, both in our own work and throughout the Girlz Ink Studio.

Take Aqua, for example—Li Pigment’s inorganic line (aka iron oxide). Michon from our team has created some stunning pixels using Aqua pigments. But she’s also created equally gorgeous pixels using Loaded, Li Pigment’s organic line.

So what’s the takeaway?

➡️ It’s not about the pigment—it’s about the artist behind the machine.

Stop the Pigment Shaming

Let’s stop saying things like “You can’t create pixels with iron oxide.” That mindset is outdated and misinformed. You can create a beautiful pixelated brow with either organic (carbon-based) or inorganic (iron oxide) pigments. Period.

At the end of the day, all of our tools—machines, needles, and pigments—are just that: tools. It’s up to us to use them with intention, training, and skill.

If you’re not seeing pixels in your healed work, it’s time to look at your depth, needle selection, machine settings, and movement—not your pigment choice.
